Internal Alterations - Marchmont, Edinburgh

Private Residence: Transforming Interiors

The project involved internal structural alterations and upgrade of a tenement flat in central Edinburgh to provide a home suitable for modern family life.

The existing property has large and well-lit rooms with historic details of timber panelling and cornices retained, however the kitchen was a small space and poorly connected to the rest of the home via a series of dark corridor and box / storerooms.

The removal of structural masonry walls created an open plan kitchen dining space and by incorporating a breakfast ‘perch’ bar provides extra surface and storage space for informal socialising and a place for home working and schoolwork etc. The relocation and integration of the appliances and cupboards enhances both ergonomic functionality and aesthetics of the kitchen and allows enhanced connection with the large sash and case window and the greenery of the garden beyond. The high ceiling has been utilised by placing an extra row of wall units at high level for an additional efficient storage solution and the existing chimney repurposed for new extract ventilation.

All the electrics, lighting, plumbing and drainage have been replaced to suit the reconfigured layout and to meet current safety standards. The kitchen faces North and to improve natural light levels the kitchen units and worktop are gloss white and quartz in a white / grey veining. The light grey walls and timber herringbone flooring offer a calm palette of materials. Historic details of timber panelling, cornices and cast-iron radiators have been used to provide cohesion with the rest of the property and as a juxtaposition with the contemporary fittings and furniture.

All units, appliances, fittings, lighting, finishes, and furniture were chosen by Christine Leeman Architect.
