House Extension & Alterations - Crammond, Edinburgh-

Private Residence: Seamlessly Expanding Space

This project involves reconfiguring internal spaces along with extending the footprint of a family home.

Our architectural approach sought to rationalise circulation space internally to enhance the connection and functionality of the formal living room; retain storage space and increase the rooflights above the stair void to improve natural light levels and ventilation.  The proposal of a strategically placed dormer to the rear of the house maintains the aesthetic of the existing structure whilst allowing the creation of an additional beautifully lit and functional children’s bedroom to respond to the family’s brief and maximise intelligent space utilisation within the existing footprint.

The existing south facing garden provides a sheltered, private and enclosed space of mature landscaping ideal for family use. Key design approach was to retain as much of the generous grass lawn as possible with removal of the existing greenhouse and augmentation of the existing garage structure along the boundary optimizing the underutilised areas of the site. The extension brings versatile, well-connected spaces combining large kitchen with island unit and perch bar for informal social use; a spacious dining area; a cozy informal “snug” living space, a dedicated studio gym and rationalised utility configuration and boot room space, all meeting the client's desire for a multifunctional area fitting for 21st family lifestyle

The internal walls to create the additional bedroom and between the snug and studio are non-load bearing providing longer term flexibility of space within the home which can easily be adapted in the future to suit the changing family requirements.

The large, glazed doors and incorporation of rooflights draws natural light and ventilation into all spaces and enhances connection to the rear garden and bright Edinburgh sky providing seamless transition between interior and exterior. The pitched ceiling to the snug and studio offer generous ceiling height and view of the sky.

Preferred palette of complementary materials and architectural details to ensure harmonious transition.
