Conversion of Industrial Warehouse: Expanding Glasgow’s Creative Hub

The project involved the conversion and extension of existing 1980’s industrial sheds into new teaching and rehearsal spaces for the department of Musical Theatre and was the second phase of development to the wider site for Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

The proposals created 8 rehearsal studios along with social spaces to encourage inter departmental collaboration within the school and associated changing facilities and staff rooms. Each studio was designed specifically to respond to the client’s brief and provide a series of rehearsal and teaching spaces of differing size with enhanced natural light quality, natural ventilation, black out capabilities and incorporating technical aspects of stage production lighting, sound and audio-visual equipment.

Technical challenges included acoustic separation between studios and with social spaces; acoustic performance within the studios; sprung flooring for dance training and large 5m high doors for delivery and removal of large stage sets.
